Always Faithful: Our Ever Faithful God

2 Samuel 7:18b

“…'Who am I O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?”

Researching the stories of God’s faithfulness for this series has been a great encouragement to me. As I have written about the stories of those I know, it has reminded me of God’s faithfulness in my own life. Candidly, this series could go on endlessly. In fact, I still have a dozen or so stories of God’s faithfulness in the lives of a few friends that I could write. However, for the time being, we will move on and perhaps return to the stories of faithfulness later this year.

But for now, let’s bring this series to a close today by reminding ourselves of the faithfulness of God in the life of the Old Testament king, David. You will find most of David’s story in the Old Testament books of I and II Samuel. I encourage you to read David’s story; you will see God all over his life!

There is one particular event in David’s life to consider today and it is found in II Samuel 7. When we come to II Samuel 7 we find David setting out on a noble journey, the task of building a temple for God. David had rest from war and was sitting in the palace one day when he realized how much God had blessed him. He remembered starting as a simple shepherd boy and now he finds himself as the King living in a beautiful palace. And it occurred to David that he should build a temple for God.

At the initial discussion with the prophet Nathan, David is given the okay to proceed; but later, after Nathan consults with God, he goes back to David with a simple message. Here is the David Smith summary, “David, I never asked you to build Me a house; instead, I am building you a house.” And with that, David realized just how faithful God had been to him.

Then David humbly sat before God and said these words which we find in II Samuel 7:18,

“Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, ‘Who am I O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?’”

David was moved when he realized all God had done for him. David was overwhelmed with the faithfulness of God in his life. II Samuel 7:22 says,

“For this reason You are great, Lord God; for there is no one like You, and there is no God except You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”

Look at that phrase again, “For there is no one like You, and there is no God except for you.” David finds himself dwelling on the greatness of God.

It reminds me of Psalm 23:6 (NASB):

“Certainly goodness and faithfulness will follow me all the days of my life, and my dwelling will be in the house of the Lord forever.”

I am sure you know this principle well but let’s state it plainly and clearly: our God is an awesome God! He is ever faithful to us.

That was David’s story, that is the stories of those I have written about over the last few weeks and that is my story. God is ever faithful. I can say it without any doubt, His faithfulness has followed me all the day of my life!

As I come to a close today, I have a challenge for you. I would like to challenge you to take some time over the next few days to write out the story of God’s faithfulness in your life, God’s story in your life! It doesn’t have to be perfect. Simply put down on paper the story of the faithfulness of God to you. I suspect once you get started, you may find it difficult to stop. Why do I say that? Because God is ever faithful to His children.

If you are willing to share, email me your story of God’s faithfulness; I will not share your story with anyone else, I just simply love to read how God is at work in the lives of others.

In a few short days, we will celebrate Easter and so, starting next week, let’s begin thinking about Easter and the risen Lord Jesus Christ! As we end today, take a minute to remember the chorus of the song Awesome God by Rich Mullins.

Our God is an awesome God

He reigns from heaven above

With wisdom, power, and love

Our God is an awesome God.
