Everyday Christian Living: Start Today!
“Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, and on His Law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:1 - 2).
Over the last few weeks, we have discussed some keys to everyday Christian living. Writing this series has been so helpful to me. Often I find myself easily distracted by the busyness of everyday life. While I am not proud to say it, my to-do list will easily take priority over my daily time with Jesus in prayer and in the Word. Because of that, these reminders have helped me remain centered and focused on Christ.
Here is a quick review of all the ideas around “Everyday Christian Living.”. I encourage you to write these down and keep them in a place where you will see them so they will remind you of the importance of living every day for Jesus.
Reflect on God’s goodness
Rejoice in God’s coming
Receive God’s blessings
Rest in God’s sovereignty
Repent of our personal sin
Rely on the Holy Spirit
Rest the enemy, the devil
Run from fleshly lust
Renew our mind in God’s Word
Remember Jesus as an example of endurance
Respond in obedience to God
Resolve to wholly follow God
As we bring this series to a close I want to encourage you to take the time each day to meditate on the Word of God. Take time each morning to meet Jesus in His Word, and to listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit as He speaks to you through His Word. Psalm 1 is a Psalm that contrasts the life of the godly person and the life of the ungodly person. If you are not familiar with this, I encourage you to take some time today and study this Psalm carefully. It will challenge you to live out the life of a godly man or woman.
But for today, think with me about vs. 2, “But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, and on His Law he meditates day and night.” What is it that brings delight to your life? What is it that brings joy, strength, hope, and encouragement to your life? The Bible says that a godly person delights himself in the “Law of the Lord.” Of course, this is a reference to the Word of God. If there is one challenge for my life, for your life, and for the life of every believer is that we spend time in the Word of God.
How do you spend your “think” time? What do you do with your mind during those times when you are alone, perhaps driving in your car, or just relaxing? Psalm 1 tells us to meditate on the Word of God.
For the next few days, would you consider taking this challenge? Take 15 minutes out of your day to simply meditate on Scripture. Take a passage from Scripture, a Psalm, or a Proverb and find just one verse to think on. If you do this, especially in the morning, I suspect you will find that the verse you are meditating upon will follow you all day long.
Everyday Christian living is no easy task; it brings with it distractions, disruptions, temptations, and all kinds of challenges. Thinking on the Word of God will keep your mind centered on the things of Jesus, your heart clean from sin, and your will surrendered to the will of God.
Remember our “R” words and start meditating on the Word of God.
I look forward to being back with you next week as we start a new blog series.
