<image:caption>Over the last few weeks I have been on a journey - not a physical journey, but a journey TO the cross. In fact, I have followed Scripture beginning in John 13 and going through John 19, the cross of Jesus and then John 20, the resurrection of Jesus. Wow, what a journey! Today, however, I am embarking on another journey - a journey FROM the cross. And I want to invite you to join me each Thursday on the journey through this blog series. I also invite you to bring some others along with you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Easter Sunday is a day like no other day! Sin was defeated. The grave was emptied and death was conquered. Can you imagine what it must have been like that first Easter morning when Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb? Can you imagine the range of emotions that she felt? John 20:2 tells us that after seeing the empty tomb Mary ran to get help and came upon Simon Peter. Her words describe the horror she felt, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Have you ever found yourself waiting and hoping for God? Have you ever found yourself uncertain, unsure, and discouraged? That must have been what was in the hearts and minds of Jesus’ disciples on Saturday. The events of the day before were overwhelming. The mock trial, the horrific beating, and the cruel crucifixion are etched in the minds of Jesus’ followers. Can you imagine the questions they must have asked themselves? Perhaps they wondered…</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Do We Need the Church? Connection for Deep Roots - In the mid-1970s, my family joined a church in the area of Memphis where I grew up. My dad’s health was declining, our family was facing some challenges, and the church we joined responded to the challenges we were facing. My parents became friends with a couple in that church, Bill and Pat Maxwell. Both Bill and Pat are in heaven today however, I will forever consider them to be spiritual influences in my life as well as in the life of my parents.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Standing Near the Cross: Gina Bicknell Smith - First of all, in her losses, Gina finds herself standing by the cross. In December of 2022, just a few months ago, she lost her dad. Curtis Bicknell was 93 years old and was a dynamic individual. I look forward to telling his story one day. For today, however, I want you to know that Gina is a daddy’s girl, and this loss has been huge. She is grieving and finds herself from time to time desperately wanting to talk to her dad. As you can tell, Gina and her dad had a very special relationship. Yet, in the challenge of grief and loss, Gina is standing - and many times kneeling - near the cross of Jesus. She is looking up to Jesus and leaning on Him for her strength and hope.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Standing Near the Cross: Gina Bicknell Smith - Gina is the greatest Christian I have ever known because she consistently stands near the cross of Jesus. Her deep faith, her abounding love, and her joyful hope have always stood out and today they are still in place. Today, she is a significant influence on our grandchildren, sharing the love of Jesus with them at every turn, praying diligently for them, and making “standing near the cross of Jesus” attractive and exciting for them, trusting the Lord that each of them will choose to follow Jesus and stand near the cross themselves. I pray today that you will find yourself standing near the cross, making a difference in your life and the lives of others.</image:title>

<image:caption>Let me tell you how I see Kaitlin standing by the cross. She is standing by the cross, adjusting to a life of change. Just a few short years ago, Kaitlin had a great loss. At that time she and Will had one child, our granddaughter, Elizabeth. In addition, Kaitlin was pregnant with their second child, Patrick. On the Friday following Thanksgiving, Kaitlin received a call that her father had suddenly passed away. Kaitlin adored her dad, and Pat, her dad, adored her. To be honest this was the first real crisis I have ever seen Kaitlin navigate. Sure, she had other ups and downs in life, but this was different. We are a few years on the other side of that loss today, and Kaitlin has adjusted well and trusted Jesus along the journey. During that time, she stood by the cross of Jesus, leaned on Him, and experienced His mercy and grace.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mrs. B was a second grade teacher for many, many years. And she was one of the most loved teachers in the school. The children in her classroom, their parents, her fellow teachers and the school administrators all loved and admired Mrs. B. She loved each child and was ready to help learn and love Jesus. I have heard of many children who came to a saving faith of Jesus while they were in her class. And today, she prays for her grandchildren and great grandchildren every day and shares the love of Jesus with them at every opportunity!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Standing Near the Cross: Wanda Bicknell - Today, Mrs. B is adjusting to a new way of life; a life without Mr. B. A few months ago at age 93, he stepped from this life to eternity with Jesus. For many people, that would be devastating, perhaps even to a point where they could not recover. But not Mrs. B! While I know she misses Curtis immensely, she still loves Jesus, cares for her daughter and son, loves her grandchildren, and is preparing for what God has next. I suppose you would say that she is standing by the cross, walking in the Spirit, waiting for her next assignment from God, grieving with hope and trusting God for what He has planned. Her life is a testimony to faithfulness and stewardship. All she has belongs to Jesus; she sees herself only as a steward.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Without the Resurrection… - I Corinthians 15:12 - 19</image:title>
<image:caption>Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, your faith also is in vain. Moreover, we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ only in this life, we are of all people most to be pitied.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking Cycles of Unbelief: YOUR STORY - It has always been a goal of mine to write out Dad’s story. Over the years his story has inspired and encouraged so many people along their journeys. Truthfully, I have wanted to share it for several reasons. To give God glory and praise. Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” I hope and pray Jesus is getting glory from what is written about Dad’s life. Also, to honor Mom and Dad in making the decisions to break the cycle of unbelief and live the faith life. Dad’s life was so unusual and Mom made a conscious decision to marry him, even in the uncertainty of what would be ahead. And in their obedience, God blessed them! Thank you Jesus.</image:title>

If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”</image:caption>

But when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written: “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Dad Started Running Victory Laps - Sonny and I met when my cousin, Frank, invited him to a party at my home during my senior year of high school. I knew that he was a “free-bleeder,” but all I understood about it at the time was “if he cuts himself, it could be very serious.” I later learned what a misconception that was. One day, I came home from school and was surprised to find Sonny there having coffee with my mother. He was there to ask permission to ask me on a date. Our first dates were to school football games and oh, how much fun we had! On our third date, he talked to me about hemophilia and I learned that internal bleeding was much more serious than a cut would be. And so began our journey together.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - When Dad Started Running Victory Laps - We were married in the summer of 1956 and God gave us a very loving home together. Coming from a broken home, Sonny had learned to depend on Jesus for everything. He wrote, “I walk with Christ’s arm on my shoulder.” I loved Jesus, but I had relied on my parents through the years. We began to learn together how to fully trust Jesus, but also rely on each other to share life’s joys and pain.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - When Dad Started Running Victory Laps - The next years brought my breast cancer and radical surgery. I’ve been cancer free for 48 years now. God brought Sonny a good and stable job and some peace for a few years. Eventually, the hemophilia began to take its toll on his body. His joints began to wear out from years of bleeding, and poor circulation caused skin problems and high blood pressure. He was forced to take early retirement and was confined to a hospital bed at home for most of the years after that.</image:title>

<image:caption>“For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Finding Purpose Through Broken Dreams - At one point in their conversation, Dad asked him a question, “Am I right about what you have said, that if I come four years to Memphis State and finish all the required subjects to teach secondary education, it is very doubtful I will be allowed to teach because I have hemophilia?” His professor’s answer was devastating. “That is correct.”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Through It All: Cancer, AIDS Scare, Unemployment and Marriage Stress - I’ve had many tears and sorrow, I’ve had questions for tomorrow, There’ve been times I didn’t know right from wrong, But in every situation, God have me blessed consolation, That my trials come to only make me strong, I’ve been lots of places, And I’ve seen millions of faces, But there were times that I felt so all alone, But in my lonely hours, Yes, those precious lonely hours, Jesus let me know that I was His own, Through it all, through it all, I’ve learned to trust in Jesus, I’ve learned to trust in God, Through it all, Through it all, I’ve learned to depend upon His Word. -Andre Crouch</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Through It All: Cancer, AIDS Scare, Unemployment and Marriage Stress - Mom’s Cancer - More Faith | Dad’s illness wasn’t the only challenge. Faith had opportunity to grow when Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It seemed they just couldn’t get a break. I was an elementary student at the time. Surgery followed and so did worries about her future health and life expectancy. In addition, her mother, did not take the news well and struggled emotionally. It appears that everything was collapsing in on them as Dad’s health was continuing a downward trend. I have often wondered how they endured this season. They took one step, one day, one crisis at a time - walking by faith. In fact, I might even say that is all they could do. The circumstances were fully out of their control; all they knew to do was trust in their sovereign Lord Jesus to carry them through the trials. Mom has now been a cancer survivor for nearly 50 years and she is still walking each day by faith!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Through It All: Cancer, AIDS Scare, Unemployment and Marriage Stress - The AIDS Scare - A Deeper Faith | The 1980’s were a difficult time for hemophiliacs. Coupled with all of the effects of hemophilia on a person’s body, a new threat arose to the life of hemophiliacs across our country: AIDS. During this time it is estimated that AIDS wiped out nearly 50% of hemophiliacs across the United States. Half of the hemophiliac population lost their lives because of AIDS. Blood filtering was not yet refined, and therefore, transfusions were not clean resulting in an AIDS diagnosis and death for many. Miraculously, even with the high number of transfusions he received, Dad was never diagnosed with AIDS or tested positive for HIV, but the threat was there. The deep waters of fear and anxiety were overwhelming. Yet, God brought them through and their faith grew deep.</image:title>

<image:caption>“When Jesus came back to Capernaum a few days later, it was heard that He was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer space, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. And some people came, bringing to Him a man who was paralyzed, carried by four men. And when they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and after digging an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralyzed man was lying. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”</image:caption>

They were lifelong friends in good times, bad times, hard times and confusing times. <image:title>Blog - Amazing Grace: Sunday Mornings and Deathbed Repentance - Eventually, when he faced a health crisis, he knew where to turn. Over the course of a few short weeks, he had nine heart attacks. His survival was a miracle, and I believe, caused him to consider the condition of his soul and life. Normal life resumed after his recovery, except now, something changed.</image:title>
<image:caption>One Sunday morning, as Hazel was readying herself for church, she realized something out of the ordinary. He was up and dressed for an outing. She asked what he had planned and he announced, to her surprise, that he was going to church with her. And from that day forward, Earl attended church with Hazel. Eventually that led to a place of service in the church, carrying a Bible with him and trusting Jesus as Savior and Lord. He was saved and later baptized. This miracle is another reason we never stop praying for the ones we love who are living in unbelief!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Faith Tested: 1964-1966 - It all began in March 1964 when Dad began losing blood and, once again, his life was threatened. He had a bleed in his kidneys that put him in the hospital for a lengthy stay. The Memphis Press-Scimitar ran an article about Dad on Wednesday, March 25, 1964 and quoted him, “I’m like a car with a leaky gas tank. The only way to keep it running is to put gas in as fast as it runs out.” In this case, it was 65 pints of blood over a two week period. The article went on to say, “getting through a day is like mincing along a high wire.”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Faith Tested: 1964-1966 - In December 1964, Dad had a serious fall and broke his hip. The medical community was convinced at that time that broken bones would be fatal for a hemophiliac. After a hospital stay, Dad was placed in a full body cast in a hospital bed at our home. The cast went from his shoulders to his ankles and that brought with it the fears and anxieties of what his physical capabilities would be like after the cast was removed. Would he be able to walk again? What mobility would he have? What would life look like after the cast? All of this brought about another opportunity for trusting and believing God by faith! Eventually the cast did come off and he was able to walk. But it was obvious that the hemophilia was impacting the joints in his legs and arms. Dad would walk with a limp that would only worsen over time.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Belief Rewarded: “With this ring, I, thee wed” - Dad wrote this about marrying mom, “Life began for me with the phrase, ‘with this ring, I thee wed.’” He understood that the cycle of generational unbelief was broken when he met Jesus a few years earlier, but as it related to experiencing a true, loving earthly relationship with someone, that occurred for the first time when Dad met Mom. Dad began to see how a loving family operated. He felt authentic, sacrificial love from someone else. And my mom began lovingly seeking him. Dad wrote in one of his journals that my mom’s family celebrated his birthday with his first birthday cake EVER! Imagine being 20 years old and not ever having a birthday cake. He felt loved, valued and cared for unlike any other time in life.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Infamous Ketchup Bottle Incident: Belief Challenged - My dad’s father had remarried a sweet, kind and compassionate lady named Hazel. Through her faithful and quiet lifestyle, she began to point my grandfather to Christ. Hazel exemplified I Peter 3:1, “In the same way, you wives, be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your pure and respectful behavior.” My grandfather, this bully, brawler and fighter, now on his third marriage had begun to soften. <image:caption>“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. <image:title>Blog - Family Dynamics or Family Dynamite? - Dad’s mom was not guided by any source of spiritual conviction or relational integrity. Dad loved her very much but often spoke of her manipulation and self-centered life. Rather than providing him a nurturing environment and a loving home, she placed dad in the Memphis Crippled Children’s Home. This picture is from the Memphis Public Library. From what I can tell, this was a place where Dad was sent to live with other children that had significant health challenges.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Breaking the Cycle of Generational Unbelief - Not long after dad was born, the family realized that something was wrong with him physically. I will share more about this in the weeks to come but for now, let me explain it this way. Can you imagine picking up your newborn child under his arms, only to discover that nearly every time, a series of bruises would occur on and under his arms. These were hemorrhages and this was the first major clue that something was wrong with Dad physically. In this picture, you can see the bruising from the hemorrhages on his legs.</image:title>
<image:caption>After some time, Dad was diagnosed as a Type A Hemophiliac. Simply put, hemophilia is a bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly, causes external and internal bleeding and creates a number of health problems. While hemophilia is a hereditary disease, about 30% of cases have no history of the disease in the family. This was Dad’s case. There was no history in his family. It was simply a gene mutation that caused him to be born as a Type A, or Classic, hemophiliac.</image:caption>

Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.</image:caption>

And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - A PASTOR TO PASTORS</image:title>
<image:caption>Why are so many pastors leaving the ministry today? The call to serve as a pastor is a holy calling, but it can feel like a heavy calling at times. Some days are filled with joy, excitement, and vision. And some are filled with fear, anxiety, and discouragement. Regardless of what a day brings, a pastor needs a friend, advisor, and confidant. In short, a pastor needs a pastor.</image:caption>
